CHAPTER 24
âBut youâyou canât cross the Fade if itâs not the Blood Moon,â I say hastily. The idea of bringing a vampir back to Hunterâs Hamlet is as uncomfortable as a hammer hitting too-cool metal and ricocheting off with a deafening clang and a vibration that runs up your whole arm.
âI canât,â Ruvan agrees. âAs a distant descendant of one of the first kings, my powers are too deeply entrenched in Midscape to slip by the keystones that mark the Fade unnoticed. But one of my covenant might be able to.â
âCan we?â Lavenzia seems surprised by this information.
âThe Succumbed can do it on the full moon,â Ruvan says.
âThey can?â Quinn is startled alongside the rest of them.
âHunterâs Hamlet is attacked most full moons,â I say, remembering Ruvanâs and my conversation before we fell through the ceiling. Ruvan had been surprised by the information; it seems sensible the rest of them are as well.
âHow are they getting out of the castle?â Winny asks.
âThereâs the old portcullis.â Lavenziaâs mind goes right to where mine first went. âBy the sea.â
Callos considers this and arrives at the same conclusion I did. âIt always seemed shut tight. Though, Iâm not sure where else they could be getting out from. The full moon strengthens even the Succumbed. Perhaps they can sense the blood on the other side of the Fade? Or perhaps itâs some old habits that draw them across; maybe theyâre old vampir going back to the summer castle before the land was torn up. Either way, if they can do it, we should be able to find a way while our powers are heightened as well.â
âItâll take a lot of magic, which means a lot of blood.â Lavenzia puts her hands on her hips.
âWe have rations,â Ruvan says.
âWhich we donât want to dip too deeply into. Itâs a long time until the next Blood Moon,â Quinn cautions.
âItâll be enough if all the rations go to one person.â The rest of them still at Ruvanâs words. âWorse comes to worst, weâll leave finding the curseâs anchor to the next lord or lady and their covenant. Weâll sustain only one of us, until the time comes to wake the next group. It wouldnât be the first time itâs come to that in our history.â
Only one of us⦠That means only one of them would be awake, and the rest would go off and end themselves before the curse could. That person would wait, alone, counting the days until they wake the next lord or lady and their covenant. Locked away in some safe corner of the castle, no doubt. Not daring to venture too far.
Their lives are hard and lonely enough as they are. But they at least have each other. What Ruvan is suggesting sounds almost too heartbreaking to bear. And yet, they all seem convinced itâs the right path. Theyâre all willing to make that sacrifice.
âIt wonât come to that.â I stand as well. âWe will break the curse. While Iâm off getting the elixir, you and Callos can look through the information we got from the workshop.
